Burke Database

Instructions for downloading the Burke Database appear at the bottom of this page.  Print  this page and follow the instructions.

The Burke database is designed to support the Flyleaf Press title Annie's Letter by Robert Burke (ISBN 09539974-6-4) published in 2004. It provides the detailed information on all of the families mentioned in the book, and many more besides.

The database, which was compiled by Robert Burke over a period of 10 years, started as a Burke family tree but grew gradually to include details on 18,000 persons from a wide range of related families.

The database is run on the Brother's Keeper genealogical programme for Windows (version 6).

Robert Burke, the compiler of the database, provides the following background and advice on using the database: "Despite the program requiring all entries to be linked, the database grew rapidly, particularly with the inclusion of families related by marriage to the Burkes and connections traced through female lines. I also included well-known links such as that between the de Burgo and British Royal families. However as the tree developed I included marriages between well-known families that were not readily apparent from these records, particularly Irish and Anglo-Irish families from the west of Ireland. I also made many entries from unpublished sources such as individual family records and from pedigrees found in the Genealogical Office. The database is therefore a unique record of over 18,000 persons, mainly Irish, all related.

A few points of explanation, and caution, to the user!

  • In the early days I was guilty of a haphazard approach to recording sources of information; the situation improved somewhat with experience but you may find that the source of my data is not always stated.

  • To facilitate searching, I also avoided variations in spelling, e.g. de Burgo, Burgh and Bourke are all entered as "Burke".

  • Some entries appear under questionable headings - early ones that should be shown under "ancestral interest" appear under "resided". This was caused by technical problems encountered along the way.

  • Details of living persons, and those under the age of 100 years have been excluded.

  • I have to admit to adding some well-known names where I was able to definitely trace the connections, usually through a number of marriages. Hence on the database can be found not just Granuaile, Queen Victoria and Charlemagne, but also Winston Churchill, Fred Astaire, Napoleon and Jane Austen, to name but a few! "

The "find" facility will enable readers to search the database for their own or any other family name.

Brother's Keeper is a Windows genealogy shareware program that will help you organize your family history information and let you print a large variety of charts and reports.
